Alexandros Vavatzanidis (b. 1998) is a South African / Greek composer, classical guitarist and teacher. His music, often described as vivid or cinematic, has formed under the tutelage of Hendrik Hofmeyr and Martin Watt at the University of Cape Town, where he received his Bachelor of Music (Dec 2020) and his Master of Music (Aug 2025) focusing on composition and analyses related to Einojuhani Rautavaara's music. Alexandros' academic and creative interests have afforded him opportunities to premiere both South African and international compositions on the classical guitar, study abroad at UCLA for a reciprocity programme, and have his compositions performed and recorded from various ensembles. These works range from solos, string quartets and symphonic orchestral works and have won many national prizes. Alexandros seeks to merge both a rigour of logos along with a deeply raw, emotional sense to his music – it foremost must be potent music.

The classical guitar is my first musical love and my primary instrument.
Nothing compares to its intimacy and, conversely, the rhythmic exhilaration it can create.
Whether it’s a wedding, contemporary concert, recording, or private function —
